Cicely Tyson – Entertainer

Refusing to play roles she felt demeaned black women, Cicely Tyson had a career that lasted over six decades. An Emmy and Tony winning actress, she was also nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in “Sounder.”  Her commitment to only playing strong positive images of black women meant that she did not appear steadily onscreen, but it did mean that when she did, she made an incredible impact.  She became known for her roles in “Roots,” “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman,” “How to Get Away with Murder,” “A Trip to Bountiful,” “The Help,” among many others.
