After suffering from a scalp condition that resulted in the loss of her own hair, Sarah Breedlove, later to become known as Madame CJ Walker, invented a line of African American hair products. Her business finesse led her to become one of the first American women, self-made millionaires. She not only manufactured the hair products and cosmetics in her own Madame CJ Walker Laboratories but trained sales beauticians there. Also known for her philanthropic work, she founded educational scholarships, donated to homes for the elderly, the NAACP, and towards the construction of the Indianapolis YMCA in 1913.
