Mamie Phipps Clark was an American social psychologist who, along with her husband Kenneth Clark, focused on the development of self-consciousness in black preschool children. Mamie Phipps Clark was born in Hot Springs, Ark., in 1917. Her research on racial identity and self-esteem helped pave the way for future research on self-concept among minorities.
