Mary Ann Shadd Cary – Abolitionist

Born in Delaware as a free woman in 1823, Mary Ann Shadd Cary founded the first newspaper published by a black female in North America, The Provincial Freeman.  She used the paper to encourage Black people to seek their freedom in Canada while also lecturing in the United States in Canada soliciting aid for runaway slaves.  After the war, Mary Ann Shadd Cary received her law degree and testified before Congress in support of the 14th and 15th Amendments.
