Born December 3, 1852 Phoebe Apperson Hearst was born to affluent farmers Randolph Walker Apperson and Drucilla (Whitmore) Apperson in Franklin County, Missouri. She is the mother of newspaper mogul William Randolf Hearst. After her husband passed in 1891, Phoebe used her fortune to help multiple organizations, especially University of California at Berkley. Her contributions were to be used to provide scholarships for women to attend the university. Hearst built several libraries across the United Stated and filled them with books. She also started and funded the National Parent Teachers Association.
